What we clean

Elite Jetwashing Services soft washes brickwork, masonry and natural or reconstituted stone across Bolton, Greater Manchester and the North West:

  • Brick house frontages, elevations and chimney breasts
  • Garden walls, boundary walls and retaining walls
  • Natural stone: sandstone, gritstone and reconstituted stone
  • Gate pillars, porches, steps and feature stonework
  • Shaded, north-facing and tree-lined walls that go green and spotty first

How we do it

  1. Assessment. We check the brick or stone type, the age and condition of the mortar, and whether the staining is algae, lichen, moss or pollution grime, then choose the safest treatment.
  2. Protect the surroundings. Plants, borders and paths near the wall are dampened down and shielded before we start.
  3. Soft wash treatment. A low-pressure professional cleaning solution is worked into the surface. It breaks down the green algae, black spotting and lichen at the root, rather than us forcing them off with pressure.
  4. Dwell and gentle rinse. The solution is left to do its job, then everything is rinsed at controlled, low pressure, never blasted, so the brick face and the mortar joints stay intact.

Brick, stone and why pressure washing gets it wrong

Brick and stone look tough, but older handmade brick, weathered sandstone and lime or sand mortar are all softer than they look, and a high-pressure jet wash erodes them. You end up with a pitted, spalling face, blown-out pointing and open joints that let water straight into the wall, and often a repointing bill on top of the clean.

Soft washing avoids all of that. An approved cleaning solution breaks down the algae, moss and lichen chemically, and the growth and staining rinse off at low pressure. Ryan is Module 2 chemical-handling certified and we’re fully insured. Because the growth is killed at the root, the wall also stays clean for longer instead of greening straight back up. We still use jet washing where it belongs, on hard surfaces like driveways and patios, but brick and stone always get the soft wash.

Why it matters

Left alone, algae and moss hold damp against the wall, and lichen and pollution grime slowly eat into the surface. On shaded stone that means green film and black spotting; in eroded mortar it means moss taking hold and pulling joints apart. Cleaning it off isn’t just about looks. A clean, dry, well-pointed wall sheds water instead of soaking it up, which protects the masonry behind it.

Brick & stone cleaning FAQ

The questions we get asked most about brick & stone cleaning in Bolton and Greater Manchester.

Is pressure washing safe for old brick and stone?

No, and it's the most common way brickwork gets ruined. High-pressure jet washing can blow out soft older brick, erode the face of natural stone and rip out weak lime or sand mortar, leaving joints open to water. That's why we soft wash brick and stone instead: low pressure and a proper cleaning solution do the work chemically, so nothing gets blasted.

Can you remove red, green or black staining from brick and stone?

Yes. Green staining is algae, black spotting and dark patches are usually lichen or pollution grime, and reddish tints are often algae too. Soft washing kills the growth at the root and lifts the staining out of the surface. Deeply embedded lichen or heavy black spotting can need a second treatment. We'll tell you honestly what to expect before we start.

Will cleaning damage the mortar or pointing?

Not with soft washing. Because we work at low pressure and let the cleaning solution do the work, we don't wash out the mortar the way a pressure washer can. If we spot pointing that's already loose or eroded we'll flag it so you can decide whether to repoint. We won't make an existing problem worse.

Do you clean garden walls and boundary walls, not just house frontages?

Yes: garden walls, boundary and retaining walls, gate pillars, porches, brick and stone frontages, chimney breasts and feature stonework. Shaded, north-facing and tree-lined walls are the ones that green up and spot the fastest, and they're exactly the ones soft washing handles well.

How much does brick and stone cleaning cost in Bolton?

There's no set rate. Brick and stone cleaning is quoted per job, because the cost depends on the size of the wall or frontage, the type of brick or stone, how much algae, lichen or moss there is and how easy the access is. Send a few photos and we'll give you a rough estimate, then confirm a fixed price in writing at a free visit before any work begins. No obligation.
